A New Hope for Video Games: STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT

The Force is strong with PopSugar… We’ve got Anakin Skywalker overseeing our engineering department, droids rolling around the office and an entire theatre reserved for The Force Awakens movie launch. So it should be fairly obvious that we are beyond psyched about tonight’s release of Star Wars: Battlefront.

Unlike Dak Ralter, we do have an approach vector and are set for battle! A couple of us pre-ordered the limited edition Playstation 4 console bundle and will be bringing it into the office to play with everyone else. If you haven’t heard about this game yet, I think it’s safe to say your midi-chlorian count is low.

Allow me to preface by saying that this will likely be one of the greatest games, and easily the best Star Wars franchise game, ever produced. I know this is a bold statement considering its association with Electronic Arts, but don’t be dissuaded… Battlefront was developed by DICE, a Swedish company founded by five Scandinavian dudes (probably all good looking) responsible for creating the Battlefield series. In a behind-the-scenes video, Niklas Fegreaus (design directory at DICE), stated that

DICE set out “to make the Star Wars game that, as fans, we’ve all dreamt of playing.”

I take immense comfort in that statement. DICE went back to the film set locations and visited the Lucas archives to get up-close-and-personal with the original movie props, vehicles and sound effects in order to create the most realistic game possible. So, trust, it will be spectacular!

It pits the Rebel Alliance versus the Galactic Empire on Hoth, Tatooine, Endor and a new planet called Sollust. On December 1st, planet Jakku (the stage for The Force Awakens) will become available. There are multiple game modes including co-operative survival style missions and large-scale, objective-based multiplayer battles.

Most of the time you will be running around as either a Rebel infantry man or a Storm/Snowtrooper, but littered throughout the battlefield are special power-ups that allow you to rain down orbital strikes or transform your character into a powerful hero. That means you get to play as Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Emperor Palpatine or march around Endor as Darth Vader thrashing Ewoks with a lightsaber. It’ll be glorious.

If that weren’t enough, another type of power-up allows you to command ground vehicles like the AT-ST, Snowspeeder, 74-z Speeder Bike and (yes, your dreams have come true) the almighty AT-AT. You can even relive the infamous “Walker Assault” scene and pulverize the main generator!

DICE went one step further and completely outdid themselves. You get to take the battle into space with power-ups that give you control over a Tie-Fighter, Tie-Inteceptor, X-Wing, A-Wing, the Millennium Falcon, a Lambda-class Imperial Shuttle and even Boba Fett’s Slave I! Navigate alongside Corellian ships like the Rebel Transport Shuttle and Imperial Star Destroyers.

If you aren’t sold yet, check out these epic trailers for a real taste. See you on Hoth!
